When is it time to unblock drains at home?

Effective drainage is one of the cornerstones of modern society. Without working drains, society, cities and your home and health are all at risk. Generally speaking, what goes down the drain is stuff you really don’t want to come back up or stick around for long periods. When your drains fail it can cause a mess, a horrible smell and a whole bunch of headaches for you and your family. So, it’s important to keep an eye out for signs that your drains are getting blacked and when you need to call a plumber out to get them unblocked and working again.

Here’s five signs it’s time to unblock your drains.

Water rising

Water should only be going one way when it’s in the draining system – down. If you notice that any water is coming back to the surface or sitting just below the drain level, it’s usually not a good sign. Sometimes this can occur when you have a blockage in the system that affects different drains. I.e., one drain fills up when using another drain around the house.

Water pooling around more than one drain outside

One outside drain that has a bit of pooling may not be a major cause for alarm. There might be some leaves or other debris just inside or on top of the drain and it can be easily unblocked. If you notice that pooling is occurring on multiple drains at the same time, it’s usually a sign of a more serious blockage and it’s time to get the professionals out.

Gurgling coming from drains or toilets

A perfect working drain shouldn’t make any noticeable noise. If your drain suddenly has an audible gurgle or other noise it could be the first sign that there are some foreign objects in there that are affecting the flow of water and are causing that gurgling sound.

Strange smells coming from your drain

Sewers and drains smell. The stuff we put in there is not stuff we want around the house and every drain smells. However, it shouldn’t smell inside your house! If you notice a strange smell coming from your sink, your outside drains or anywhere there is a drain, it might mean that things are getting blocked. Food and other waste products are sitting in your drain and causing a foul stench.

Regularly failing drains

Let’s face it, the first time a drain gets blocked most people reach for the plunger and get to work. Oftentimes you can unclog whatever was in there and move on with your day feeling proud you got to fix something. However, if it keeps happening, it’s time to get a plumber out because your trusty plunger isn’t going to solve the underlying problem.
